HOW TO CHANGE DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS) SERVER?

WHAT IS DNS?

DNS stands for ‘Domain Name System’ and it acts as a phonebook of the Internet. Just the way web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources. DNS is a way for computers to find where it can find specific websites and services online.

1. Click on the Start button and type Network Status (or right-click on your Wi-Fi icon and pick Open Network and Internet settings).
2. Click on Change Adapter Settings.
3. Right-click on your active network connection, then click on Properties.
4. Left click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties. (If you use IPv6, change that one also/instead.)
5. Click on “Use the following DNS server addresses:” and type in one of the following public DNS server addresses:

• 1.1.1.1 = CloudFlare DNS
• 208.67.220.220 or 208.67.222.222 = OpenDNS
• 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 = GoogleDNS
• 84.200.69.80 or 84.200.70.40 = DNS.Watch
• 64.6.64.6 or 64.6.65.6 = VeriSign Public DNS

STEPS TO CHANGE THE DNS SERVER ON MAC

1. Open System Preferences and then click on Network.
2. Click Advanced and then you click on the DNS tab.
3. Click the little (+) sign at the lower left to add a new DNS server.
4. Type in the numbers of a public DNS server (see the suggestions in the Windows section above).
5. Click OK and click Apply.

STEPS TO CHANGE THE DNS SERVER USED BY IPHONE AND IPAD (IOS)

1. Go to the Settings and select Wi-Fi. Tap the small “i” icon next to the name of the network that needs the DNS server details changed and tap Configure DNS.
2. At the top, change the settings from Automatic to Manual. In the section below, tap the red minus circle next to the DNS servers followed by Delete to remove them.
3. Next, select the Add Server option, then in the new empty listing, type in the DNS server IP address you wish to use and repeat for a second listing if a redundancy option is available. Once finished, tap Save in the top-right corner.
4. The same process can be used to change the servers again later, or to revert back to the connection’s default. To use the DNS server the Wi-Fi network specifies, change from Manual back to Automatic.

Note: This change will only apply to specific Wi-Fi networks and not all networks. This setting needs to be changed on all Wi-Fi networks that you wish to use your DNS server through.

STEPS TO CHANGE THE DNS SERVER ON ANDROID PRODUCTS

1. Navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi from your Android phone or tab.
2. Press and hold on the wi-fi zone name that you use regularly. Then choose Modify Network.
3. Scroll down and check Advanced Options. It will bring two more settings.
4. Tap on DHCP and choose Static if your IP Settings is not already set to static.
5. Scroll down and find DNS 1 and DNS 2.
6. Set any DNS server addresses you prefer. Supposedly, you want to use Google DNS. (You can type 8.8.8.8 in DNS 1 and 8.8.4.4 in DNS 2)
7. Tap on SAVE. You can now reconnect to WiFi.
